Earning trust, one step at a time
With Riot, adoption did not truly begin when the paperwork was signed, but when the first difficulties appeared and we had to learn to move forward differently.
The story
After a two-week trial, we adopted Riot. More challenging behaviours then appeared. Rather than deciding he was too difficult, we chose to observe what he was expressing, make situations safer and seek appropriate support.
We now identify triggers, involve relevant professionals and adjust expectations to his actual pace. Progress is not linear, but it is real: he watches and listens more, some reactions have reduced and he is gradually able to enjoy walks, hikes and calm moments with us.
This experience also teaches me to distinguish a reaction from an intention and not reduce anyone to their most difficult moments. When one method fails, slowing down and understanding more can reveal another route forward.
What I take from it
Understand before judging, adapt before giving up and recognise every real improvement.
